Netball

History of the Club – The start

netballThe Geelong Amateur Netball club entered the Bellarine competition in February 1995. After the football section had been accepted into the competition Jill Trevaskis and Jenny Harwood initiated a small committee to get the new netball club off and running. With Jill’s previous experience with Geelong West Netball Association the club went into 1995 with three senior teams, B, C, and D. Our home courts would be Geelong West’s netball courts in Douglas Street Herne Hill. The courts were efficient, but the shelter and facilities were a little rough but it was a start.

Winning our first netball match in all grades was historic and special especially for those girls who were there then, and who are at the club now and remember how good it felt, as the first year as a club we were very much like fish out of water, and we were beaten 90% of the year probably by an average of 40 goals a week.

The colors of the Football and Netball club are light blue and bottle green. The original uniform consisted of a bottle green netball skirt, white polo shirt and light blue bibs with bottle green lettering. Now the uniform is a green Lycra body suit, white panelling down the sides with white bibs and blue lettering.

Our official club emblem is the Peagasus flying through a capital G. Our original home ground was Douglass Street Herne Hill and then we moved to The Geelong College Prep School, on the rebound ace. We then moved to our current and permanent home ground at Queens Park in 2002. Two courts were built on the far side of the football ground. The courts are situated in a picturesque location surrounded by the local golf course. The courts were officially opened at the beginning of the 2002 season, the courts were named “The Trevaskis Family Courts” after their valuable contribution to the club

The season of 2002 was truly a memorable one, C grade defeated Queenscliff at Torquay to record the clubs 1st Premiership. After 7 years in the Bellarine Netball Competition this truly was a special and defining moment for the club.

The club has continued to grow throughout the years, although we still have not fielded all Junior teams with the competition (Bellarine Netball enable clubs to field 7 Junior teams including Under 11, Under 13’s Section 1 & 2, Under 15’s Section 1 & 2, Under 17’s & Under 19’s) there are several other clubs situated around the Highton/Newtown area which makes fielding all juniors sides a huge challenge.

In 2005 we fielded our first Under 11 team and won both the A & C grade premierships this was a start of the by far the clubs most successful successive years. 2006 both A & B grade won premierships, and in 2007 A Grade completed three premierships in row.

The junior section has also become a strong and competitive part of the Bellarine competition.
